Reading

This site is really cool!  It has lots of interesting answers to things you may have always wondered about.  There are some tricky words to read so you may need an adult to help you.

Have a read of this.  There’s a video clip and pictures too.  You may even want to try making a water clock or sundial.

or

Read a story for 15 mins from your home library.  If you don’t have one go on Vooks or Storyonline.  Read a few pages or a chapter to someone in your household.

Maths
Today’s Focus:
Learning: Time Elapse

Warm Up
Spend 5 minutes practising how to read an analogue clock.  (o’clock, quarter past, half past).  Practice saying out loud the months of the year/days of the week.

Time Problems

1.  Every Saturday you play soccer. Today is Tuesday. How many days do
you have to wait until you play soccer?

2. This afternoon we are having a party. My friends will arrive at 3 o’clock. It is
1 o’clock now so how long do I have to wait for them to come?

Tricky!!
3. You catch a train at 8.30am and get off the train at 9.15am. How long was
your train ride?

4. In three months it is my birthday and in 5 months it is my sister’s birthday.
This month it is January so what month is my birthday and what month is
my sister’s birthday.

5, Our school has a fiafia night on Friday. If it starts at 5.30 and finishes 3
hours and 30 minutes later, what time does it end?

Go on Studyladder and find the time activities, work on these.

Writing
 Today’s Writing is for Mum!

So you’re going to have to go somewhere quiet to do this (ask Dad to check it for you).

Acrostic Poem

Write an acrostic poem about Mum.  Use the first letters of her name and write words or sentences about her e.g

Loving and kind to others
Intelligent and Interesting
Special inside and out
Advenurous and an Angel

Or

Finish off these lines…

Dear Mum, (or Grandma)

I love the way you…
You make me smile when …
If I had a million dollars I’d buy you …
I really love it when we…
I love you more than …
If I could tell you anything it would be …

Love from ________

This writing will go inside the card that you’re making today. Or you might say it out loud to her.

Fitness/
Brain Break
The rain has gone it’s time to head outside for a run around!  See if you can find these items when you’re out for a walk or scooter.  Or if you’re staying at home use your backyard…

Scavenger Hunt Time

Choose ten or more letters from the alphabet (before you head out.)  Try and find ten things that start with these letters when you’re out exploring today.

OR

Go outside throw a ball high in the air.  How many times can you throw it before it drops?
Can you clap in between throws?
What's the highest number of claps you can do?
Let’s Get Cooking (optional)
Wouldn’t it be nice to make some baking for Mum or Grandma for Mother’s Day?

I’ve included a link to a blog I’ve been making with the Nikau children.  On it are all sorts of recipes.  This week I’ve added two different types of fudge recipes, Russian Fudge and Chocolate Fudge.

Maybe you could get Dad to help you make these for Mum.  Or you could bake with Mum but pretend you’re making it for Grandma (but give it to both of them??).  Just a thought … this is an optional activity.

If you’re feeling crafty later in the week you could make a an origami bag to put them in.

Mother’s Day Cards

Depending on what resources you have available to make your card will help decide which of these mother’s day cards will suit you.  I’m going to put pictures of the cards and you choose the one that will work best.  Remember it’s the thought that counts.  Your Mums or Grandmas will just love any effort you put in and I always think the words inside the cards are the most important part.

Just use whatever you have handy .... felts and pencils are fine too.  Or head outside on Sunday, make Mum a picture out of leaves/stones or draw a chalk flower on the concrete and read the message you wrote out loud.  Be inventive you can't go wrong she will love whatever you do!!
